This Privacy Policy explains how the SHPE NJIT mobile application and website (the “Service”) collect, use, store, and protect personal information.
The Service is operated by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers – New Jersey Institute of Technology Chapter (SHPE NJIT), a recognized student organization at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. The Service is not an official product of NJIT and does not act on behalf of NJIT.
By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
What the Service Does
The Service supports:
- User accounts and authentication
- User profiles (including optional professional information and resumes)
- Events (browsing, RSVPs, add-to-calendar, and QR code check-in)
- A community feed (posts, images, comments, likes)
- Engagement features (points, rankings, recognition)
- Community safety tools (reporting and blocking)
- Optional push notifications
Information We Collect
Information You Provide
When you create an account or use features of the Service, you may provide:
- Name
- Email address
- Profile photo
- User type (e.g., student, alumni, professional)
- Academic or professional information you choose to share
- Optional contact or professional links (e.g., LinkedIn, portfolio)
- Resume files and resume metadata (if uploaded)
- Event feedback, responses, or submissions
Providing this information is voluntary, but some features may not be available without it.
Event & Participation Data
To support events and engagement, we collect:
- Event RSVPs and registrations
- Event check-ins (including QR code scans)
- Attendance timestamps and check-in method
- Participation history related to points or recognition features
This data is used solely for chapter operations, engagement, and planning.
User-Generated Content
The Service allows you to create and upload content, including:
- Feed posts and images
- Comments and likes
- Profile content and photos
- Event photos or shoutouts
Content you upload may be visible to other signed-in users within the Service. We do not use user-generated content for advertising or external commercial purposes.
Community Safety Data
To support a safe community, we collect:
- Reports you submit about users or content
- Blocking relationships (users you block)
Authorized administrators may review this information to enforce community standards.
Permissions & Device Access
Depending on how you use the Service, we may request access to:
- Camera – for QR code event check-in or photo uploads
- Photos / Files – to upload profile images, feed images, or resumes
- Calendar – to add SHPE events to your personal calendar
- Notifications – to send announcements, reminders, and updates
All permissions are optional and can be managed through your device’s iOS or Android settings. Some features may not function without required permissions (for example, QR check-in requires camera access).
Notifications
If you opt in to push notifications, we collect:
- A device push token (used only to deliver notifications)
- Notification preference or status information
Notifications are optional, and core app functionality does not require them.
Technical & Usage Information
We may collect limited technical data such as:
- Device type and operating system
- App usage activity
- Crash logs or error diagnostics (if enabled)
This information is used only to maintain, secure, and improve the Service.
How We Use Information
We use collected information to:
- Authenticate users and manage accounts
- Display user profiles and community content
- Facilitate event registration, check-in, and attendance tracking

We collect only the minimum data necessary to support SHPE NJIT’s educational and organizational mission.

Service Providers
We use trusted third-party providers to operate the Service, including:
- Supabase – authentication, database, and file storage
- Expo and platform services – app distribution, updates, and notifications
- Apple or Google – only if you choose their sign-in options
These providers process data only on our behalf and solely to provide app functionality.
In-App Visibility
Certain information is visible to other signed-in users, depending on how you use the Service, including:
- Profile information you choose to share
- Profile photo (if set)
- Posts, comments, likes, and other community activity
- Resume files, if uploaded (accessed via time-limited links)
Legal & Safety
We may disclose information if required to comply with law or if necessary to protect the rights, safety, or security of users or the Service.
Data Retention
We retain personal information only as long as necessary to:
- Support active membership and engagement
- Maintain historical event participation records
- Meet organizational or operational requirements
You may request deletion of your account and associated data at any time. Some data (such as logs or backups) may persist temporarily due to technical constraints.

Data Security

No system is completely secure, but we take appropriate steps to reduce risk.
Children’s Privacy
The Service is intended for college students, alumni, and professionals. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13.
Non-Discrimination
SHPE NJIT does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, sexual orientation, veteran status, disability, or field of study, consistent with NJIT policies and applicable law.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted with an updated “Last updated” date. Continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
